Different Types of Wedding Gowns

Different Types of Wedding Gowns

Shopping for the perfect wedding dress can be quite an overwhelming experience, though also a rewarding experience once that special gown has been found. However, most brides become quickly overwhelmed by the vast amount of wedding gowns available. A great way of bypassing any extra stress related to finding “the dress” is to learn a little bit about the different types of wedding gowns before heading to the store.

There are just about as many different types of wedding gowns as there are brides wearing them. There are many different styles, shapes, lengths, fabrics, and designers. So how does a bride to be decide which dress is right for her? The formality of the event is important because it can influence the style gown a bride should choose. However, the categories of wedding styles are somewhat flexible; this should give you the basic idea.

Formal Weddings

Formal weddings usually occur in the evening though some have been known to take place during the day. Formal weddings during the day usually occur in the late afternoon. Formal evening weddings are usually elaborate, ornate, and classic. The bride’s gown may follow suit. Fabrics for formal evening weddings usually consist of beading, satins, peau de soie, and shantung. Brides may choose gowns with longer trains and veils for formal evening weddings.

Formal daytime weddings usually call for formal gowns, though a little more casual than the evening wedding. In most cases, the daytime formal wedding gown may be of lighter weight fabric, especially if the wedding takes place during a warm season. The gown may be short sleeved or strapless with gloves. Taffeta and silk are very popular for these types of weddings. Brides often choose shorter veils and trains for daytime formal weddings.

Semiformal Weddings

When it comes to semiformal weddings, brides may choose gowns typical for either daytime or evening weddings. Though these gowns are often less elaborate than formal wedding gowns, they are no less beautiful. Popular fabrics for semiformal weddings include chiffon and very little lace and beading. Wedding gowns for semiformal events may be short or long-sleeved, with a train or without, and may or may not have a veil.

Informal Weddings

Many brides opt for short dresses (tea-length or to the knee) or even cocktail suits for informal weddings. While you may see some lace and beading on an informal wedding gown, it is not likely. Common fabrics include chiffon, satin, or even shantung. Usually, there is no train or veil during an informal wedding, as many brides will wear a tasteful hat or flowers in her hair. Many beach weddings are informal, with shoes optional as well.

Finding the Dress

While tradition states that certain types of wedding gowns are ideal for certain types of weddings, there is no rule to say what you absolutely can and cannot do. If you find a formal wedding gown that you absolutely adore (and can afford) by all means, wear it to your semiformal wedding. After all, you are the bride and it is your day.

Keep that in mind as you shop for your special dress, pay particular attention to fabrics, lengths, and looks that you like. For example, if you know that you are not a fan of satin, beading, and lace do not bother, even if that wedding of yours is going to be a formal evening event. The most important rule when it comes to choosing between the different types of wedding gowns is that you find what you love.

Because there are so many different styles and types of wedding gowns, be sure to purchase a couple of wedding and bridal magazines before you go to the dress shop. This way, you should have an idea of what types of wedding gowns appeal to you. Do not forget to tear out the pictures to show the dressmaker or shop assistant when you meet for your first time. Armed with what you like, he or she should be able to effectively help you find the wedding gown of your dreams.

In addition, remember, shopping for your wedding gown should be a fun experience, not a stressful one. If you feel overwhelmed after seeing the variety of gowns available in the store, just take a step back and relax. Let the shop assistant help you with a few options and give them a try. You may find the perfect dress you have been searching for. Before you go shopping for a wedding gown, you should know the formality of your wedding celebration. This is important because it makes shopping for a dress much easier. There are many styles to choose from and some of these styles may not be appropriate for a formal or informal wedding. By knowing this information, you can eliminate many styles from the selection, resulting in a less stressful purchase.

Basically three things tell you whether a dress (wedding or not) is formal or 'informal' (which I am taking to mean semi-formal)

1. Length. Due to the impracticalities and expenses of a long train, big/wide skirt and full length dress – this extra material will generally mean a more formal occasion. A shorter, not-so-full skirt will indicate a more practical and less expensive dress – therefore a less formal occasion.

2. Fabric. More formal fabrics such as silk are much more expensive (therefore you don't want to be wearing them everyday or you would ruin the fabric!) These are left for formal occasions. Whereas cottons (for example) are cheaper, courser fabrics which are more casual and better for more general (informal) occasions.

3. Detailing. If a dress has a lot of beading and/or lace and/or embroidery then it is more formal. The more work that goes into a dress the more expensive. Therefore a more simple dress without this detail is going to be less expensive – and less formal. There are also impracticalities with beading and lace which would mean you wouldn't want to wear them all the time as you may easily dirty and/or rip off the detailing.

All these things help to determine the formality of a dress. The main difference is the expense that goes into each one. More expense = more formal. Hope it helps!

There are various types of headpieces to match with different styles and designs of wedding dresses. You can buy

Crown
Tiara
Wreath
Headband
Juliet Cap
Garden Hat
Profile
Snood
Hairpins

Among all these headpieces, tiara is the most popular among brides. It is a jewelled crown embedded with crystals and gems and it makes any bride look like a princess. The garden hat is also another great accessory to get a stylish look.

You can buy hair combs to wear on one side of the head or near the nape. The choice is yours.

No matter which headpiece you choose, do make sure that it blends perfectly with your wedding dress. The role of the headpiece is basically to accentuate the beauty of the bridal gown.

Depends on how formal you want it to be.

Silk duponi, silk jacquard is a good choice since it is a little heavier and typically doesn't wrinkle. Some polyester/rayon blends will look expensive (and be expensive) and not wrinkle, nor will crepe.

I also have good luck with crepe backed satin not being too wrinkly. Style of the dress will also have a lot to do with it: a simple full skirted dress will show any wrinkle less then a complicated column one.

Ok the person who said you won't care years from now is wrong, and so is the person who said it's "your" day. I've been married for 12 years and I am very glad that I had a traditional wedding and reception. Having all your friends and family around is the best. I love weddings. Also, it's not just your day, it's his day too, so he should get a say in the planning, which you have obviously considered.

You guys need to talk about what he liked about his siblings weddings. Maybe he doesn't want a huge affair because of all the people, is he shy? You say money isn't an issue but have the two of you actually talked about that, maybe he thinks it's a waste of money. A destination wedding like his brothers had includes the cost of the honeymoon and maybe that's the appeal for him. Does he like the fact that the weddings were outside? If that's the case you can find somewhere a little closer to home than the beach. If it's the beach part that he likes, I'm not sure what to tell you except that you'll have to work that out between the two of you. I will say that I'm not a fan of outdoor weddings, because the weather doesn't usually cooperate, especially at the beach. I used to have a beach house in Duck, NC and the weather is not consistent, plus there are those icky flys that come out if the wind is blowing the wrong way. The problem with the outside is that there is alot of nature. You know I just thought of something, were the beach weddings really casual? Maybe he doesn't want to wear a tux, I know most men don't like them. Good luck, I hope you guys figure it out. My vote is for the hometown wedding with all the friends and family you can afford.

This is also a fun website to look around for prom. My prom is also this weekend. A lot of times, if you can go to a town nearby that already had prom, you can find good sales. Department stores also have sales around prom time.

I hope she finds a dress she likes in time.

Sounds fun. You have to incorporate the song "She thinks my tractor's sexy in there somewhere". How about for the exit song when the ceremony is over. A cute first dance song would be "Yes" (Brad Paisley and Chad Brock both do a version of it). It isn't that short but have the guests join in right as you guys start dancing. Cakes can be in so many different shapes and stuff. I think it would be cute to get a cake shaped like a tractor with a bride and groom in it. Talk to a baker about doing something like that and they'll make it happen. Again, a funny photo op would be you two driving into the sunset on a tractor. For a fun activity, have a hay ride, this would also be great for photos. Maybe do something fun like square dancing lessons to country music and hire a country band to play at the wedding. Something really cheesy would to have an auction for funny things like the centerpeices or dances with the bride and groom.
