How to Take Care of Your Curly Hair

Curly hair is always difficult to style. They are usually dry and frizzy, prone to breakage and damage. They are also difficult to manage because they tangle easily and break in a snap. This is why you need to be extra careful with it.

Curly hair is beautiful. It gives more character and distinction to a person. Although it is nice to have a straight hair occasionally, curls are just as great. It gives the person various images. Wavy curls are very sexy to look at and very feminine too. The perception for short little curls on the other hand is often strong and fierce.

In order to display your curls at its best, you have to learn how to take care of them. Here are some pointers that you can use:

• Use the right hair devices. Blow drying everyday is torture for the hair because of the heat. However, if you choose the right hair dryer, you will not worry about heat anymore. The tourmaline hair dryers are good for your hair. Hair dries fast and it allows hair to absorb moisture. This makes the hair healthier.

• Use the right hair product. Curly hair is usually dry and frizzy. Choose a shampoo designed for this hair type. Use a conditioner daily as well. Before putting anything on your hair, make sure that it will not cause it to dry. Most of the hair products available today contain chemicals that threaten dry hair. When you have dry curly hair, your main concern is keeping it moisturized.

• Before styling or blow-drying your hair, free it of the tangles. Gently stroke your wide teeth comb through your hair and carefully free it off the tangles. Do not force the comb through your hair. Keep in mind that it easily breaks and forcing the comb through will just cause more damage.

• When it is already free of tangles, avoid combing it every now and then. Combing your hair will only invite damage.

• Use a diffuser when blow drying your hair. The diffuser minimizes the heat and helps in its even distribution. The curls also stay beautiful after blow-drying. If you have thick curls, you will need higher heat settings but this will not be a problem if you have the tourmaline hair dryers, which are very friendly to dry and frizzy hair.

Curly hair is beautiful. It provides so much personality to an individual. However, it is a challenge to style and manage. The hair is prone to damage when handled incorrectly. This is why you have to be gentle with it. Choose the right tools to use in styling it. Pick a blower that will enhance the beauty of your hair. Choose one that locks in moisture and keeps your hair healthy. Be careful with the hair products too. Choose those especially designed for dry curly hair to make sure it will not worsen the condition of your hair. Carefully deal with the tangles and use the hair diffuser to keep your hair under control.

The best tip I ever got was to leave your conditioner in. Curly hair tends to be dry, so we need a lot of help. Shampoo as little as possible, only when you really need it, not every day. The rest of the time, just rinse and condition. Then, don't rinse the conditioner out. You can use an expensive one, or a cheap drugstore brand, as long as it's moisturizing. I like Suave humectant, but really any one would work.

Gel your hair while it's wet, and scrunch it dry with a soft old T shirt, not a towel – towels break up curls. Then air dry. I use DevaCurl gel, which is pricey, but I also like Aura Rosemary mint gel, which is hard to find, but not expensive.

Catwalk Curls Rock Spray is awesome for defining and holding, Rusk Wired Creme is also great in small doses to weigh the ends down, and Frizz-ease Dream Curls spray is great for maintaining.

You can brush/comb your hair while it's wet and has conditioner in it (during your shower). You still have to be gentle but this is the best way to untangle curly hair. You can either shower at night and put your hair up in some sort of turban or shower in the morning and use a diffuser attachment with a blow dryer (or you can just let your hair air dry).

Here are some basic tips for curly hair that you might find helpful:
*Try to find a stylist who knows how to work with curly hair. You can find ratings by region here: http://www.naturallycurly.com/curlsalons
*Don't shampoo every day.
*Comb conditioner through hair in the shower.
*Never use a brush, only a comb, or better yet fingers, when wet.
*Apply styling products to dripping wet hair
*Use styling products suited for your hair type. Don’t know yours? http://www.naturallycurly.com/hair-types
*Avoid terrycloth towels; use microfiber or tshirts instead.
*Air dry or use a diffuser with your blowdryer.
*Don't touch your hair while it’s drying.

For specific products for your hair type you might want to explore the forums at:
http://www.naturallycurly.com/curltalk/
There you can find others with the same hair type and try out some of their favorite products. So that’s really useful.

Lastly, it has made my hair so much better since I started the curly girl method! I used to almost never wear it down (it was a frizz/poof ball), but now I have pretty, shiny curls. ~:) It’s pretty radical—no sulfates (shampoo) or silicones—but it’s so great for curly hair. i have long curly hair, same texture as kerri russel acutally, but not not as long as hers was back then, but it's past my shoulder blades. I wash it every other day with a deep conditioning shampoo and conditioner. Use one especially for dry hair. I change them up, so use which ever one you like best. I change them up between Herbal essence, Dove, Vive or whatever smells good to me at the time. Then i towel dry it, and comb it with a Wide tooth comb, very important, DO not brush curly hair, EVER!! then i use a curling Mousse. Now I'm using Bed Hair mousse for curls, but i also like Tressemme and Sunsilk for Curly hair….Scrunch in a few balls of mousse and air dry, or if i'm going out and i want it to look nice i dry it with a diffuser. at night i leave it lose, i don't tie it up with anything. the next day (the day i don't wash it) it's usually a little knotted up so i just pull it back in a pony tail and scrunch the curls at the end with a little spray gel. Presto!!! heres a pic so you get an idea of my hair looks like

my hair is super curly see? http://viewmorepics.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=viewImage&friendID=72321391&albumID=436590&imageID=26355298
the key definately lies with your conditioning routine and how you handle your hair after you wash it.

-dont wash your hair too often, it dries it out, at the most only wash it every 3-5 days and do a hot oit treatment once a month at least!

-when you do wash your hair make sure you use a moisturizing conditioner and let it sit on your hair for at least five minutes! Rinse it out with cool water, and leave just a tad bit in there.

-gently squeeze as much water out of your hair as you can. dont towel dry! thats where alot of frizzies come from.

-as far a products use any leave in conditioner or frizz serum, but make sure its not too heavy and dont use too much or it will weigh down your curls.

-when applying use a wide tooth comb or just finger comb your hair to distribute the product

-if you blow dry your hair, get a DIFFUSER its an attachment for your blow dryer thats doesnt stress the hair so much as regualar blow drying. for volume in your curls, tilt your head upside down and bring the diffuser to you scalp catching your hair in the cup (you'll see when you get it) and just hold it in place for a few minutes then move to another spot until your whole head is dry.

the point is to agitate your curls as little as possible, this keeps them from getting overly bushy of frizzy and helps keep definition.

Same thing here. My hair is the same way. The biggest thing I deal with is frizz, it's not coarse or anything, just unmanagable frizz if I don't put anything on it. So I invest in my hair, that way it looks good. I grew up in a salon so I experimented with what I like and what I wanted.

It depends on the texture of your hair, if it's curly soft, or frizz curl. You know what I mean. I buy the large bottles of either Paul Mitchell, or something else, at a salon. Lords and Ladies, I don't know if you have one, but that's where I usually get it. It's cheaper if you buy the larger ones and if you split it up, you're pretty much paying the same thing as you would for the ones in the store like Pantene (which isnt very good).

So I buy a good shampoo, a moisturizing one, make sure it's creamy not clear, it has to do with what's in the shampoo.

I buy a conditioner, I usually use the Instant Moisture from Paul Mitchell as well, and the Instant moinsture line, the deep conditioner. You should also detangle you hair with a wide tooth comb, not a brush, that breaks and damages your hair. Also when you rinse your hair, try to rinse with cold water so you can seal in the moisture.

Then I use their hair get, Paul Mitchell too. It doesn't dry your hair, like many other ones out there. I believe it doesn't contain alcohol. Biolage is another good brand. If you don't like the hair gel, you can use the Biolage glaze. It's lighter than hair gel. I also blow dry my hair, and that's a different story, if you want to know how, just ask.

LUCKY GIRL!!! I myself have mid-back length naturally curly hair, and I ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT! This is what you do. First I have found that Pantene products for curly hair work the best.Get the shampoo as well as the conditioner. After you have washed and conditioned, squeeze out excess water and gently scrunch hair in an absorbent towel,NEVER and I mean NEVER rub! Next use a good leave-in treatment such as Infusium 23,with a wide tooth comb gently comb through! In the palm of you hand mix equal parts of Pantene Gel & Pantene Pro V Soft Start (the amount depends on the length of your hair) apply throughout hair, once again comb through, Gently blot and scrunch excess product from hair.THEN apply a small amount of Dove Curl& Sculpt Defining Mousse…bend over and shake your hair out and one final time scrunch with absobent towel to set curls, now LEAVE YOUR HAIR ALONE TO DRY, DO NOT TOUCH,NO MATTER HOW TEMPTED YOU ARE TO DO SO…This sounds like alot I know but it's well worth it, I have been doing this so long, my whole after shower routine takes about 2 minutes… You'll find your own pace! Have fun with your gorgeous mane!!!

For curls which i got a lot of… dont use gel because gel can make curls dry and frizzy. Use garnia frutis, and products that are specfically designed for curly hair.
No comb your hair then condition it, but its best to curl it when its damp because when its dry that just makes it puffy and frizzy. ew.
Um, maybe you should trimb your emds because spit ends can look really bad and make hair look frizzy.
Also oils (NOT BABY OIL) and slight grease can tame hair.

17

I use a lot. I shower in the morning and use curly hair shampoo and i use lots of the Frizz Ease Curl Around products and then Herbal Essences mousse that comes in a purple bottle– i couldn't live without it. Gel is okay but mousee keeps it alive lol

frizz-ease is the best. You apply a couple of drops to wet hair. Then blow dry and style. Some cream or styling milk will also help tame it.
If you want to straighten it …
Apply the frizzease and your product of choice to wet hair.
Comb out.
Blow dry until ALMOST completely dry.
The bind the upper layers of your hair to the top of your head.
Take the lower layers in small 1-11/2 in sections.
Brush/comb and straighten each. The damp strands will dry.
Then take out a little of the top layers at a time and straighten those.
Finish the ends with a tiny bit of frizz-ease.
If its humid outside it will only wave a tiny bit.
