When it comes to hair, it’s not only how healthy and shiny your hair is that counts, but a big part of your signature “crowning feature” is how you style it.  Hair styles that celebrities have donned over the past century have shaped hair cut trends amongst the general public and will for years to come.  

If you thought the power of celebrity was strong forty to fifty years ago, that’s nothing compared to the trend shaping that occurs today from the Hollywood elite.  Just look at what haircuts like the “Rachel” inspired by Jennifer Aniston’s “Friends” character, spawned in terms of salon requests and lookalikes or spinoff haistyles.  

I even donned a style that was similar to the Rachel, only longer, as did an army of women.  It was  great, versatile and almost universally flattering cut that a lot of women took advantage of in one way or another.  With the exception of a few of the latest tress-trends, most of them are very versatile, and that is part of the appeal.  You have the longer, layered cuts, and then you have short do’s that appeal to a generally smaller pool, but all in all most of them are versatile.  Same goes for men’s styles.

One of the more recent fads is bangs.  Thanks to one adorable actress who sported shorter, but very stylish bangs, Reese Witherspoon, many hairstylists around the US began to experience higher demand for bangs, specifically bangs to copy the look of Ms. Witherspoon.  Reese, another actress with a reputation for being America’s sweetheart, had unknowingly started another craze in the world of hair!

When I was in high school, which was almost twenty years ago (I can’t believe I just spoke that aloud!), every girl was trying to copy the look of the supermodels, like Cindy Crawford, who was the biggest supermodel back then.  The look was definitely long and wild, and the bigger you could get your hair, the better.  The really big bangs and perms of the eighties were out, but big, natural, sexy, just got out of bed hair was totally in.  

This trend was great for women who had naturally full hair, but it had women who were on the fine and limp side grabbing up volumizing hair products off the shelves to emulate this hot look.  All you had to do was look at any Guess Jeans ad, which was the biggest brand right about then, and you invariably see a model with bedhead, wild hair, and dark, sultry eye makeup.  This big hair look has made a comeback recently, after a long bout with an obsession over stick straight, smooth hair.  

Rewind to the nineties, and you’ll find another few years that were influenced by another sweetheart of America, Meg Ryan.  Her cute, curly and full bob was followed up by her signature choppy, short hair do, and women flocked to the stylist to get both.  Not only was she the queen of the romantic comedy, but she was also one of the major trendsetters of the nineties.  

More recently, we’ve seen a lot of copycats of the Victoria Beckham style, which she sported for a while, her signature hairstyle which was a very simple, straight cut that was chin length, but cut higher in the back.  This was one of the more universally flattering cuts that wasn’t actually long, but not quite short either.  

Not as many women followed her into her pixie cut phase, but that’s probably because not so many women can pull off such a cut since it can come off as severe and not very feminine.  I have to admit, this was not my favorite on Posh, but she has since started to grow it out a bit from pictures I’ve seen, and it’s much more soft looking on her.  

And what of the men?  Well, male haircuts don’t seem to change or evolve in trends as often as female haircuts do.  These days, as I write this in August of 2009, the “in” thing is to have messy, longer hair for men.  Think Patrick Dempsey or Benicio Del Toro.  

Out are the buzz cuts and close cropped haircuts of yesteryear, and in are the low maintenance, but product consuming hair styles that make women want to run their fingers through men’s hair.  Longer hair on men has garnered a certain sense of sex appeal, and men are no dummies in picking up on that, lots of them are taking the cue and growing their hair out for a more natural, individual look rather than a cookie cutter buzzed hair cut.  Scissors only for men these days, no clippers!

What is the meaning of the word hot water curls. Well this is a method that is used to curl your braids using hot water. You can create box braids all over your head with straight synthetic hair. You can buy all kinds of braids at your local beauty supply store. If you do not have a local beauty supply store in your area you can purchase bulk hair from the inter net. You also need some plastic rods for curling around the hair, some vaseline and a wig brush. This style is created with synthetic hair not human.

1. After you finish braiding your hair, you are now ready to curl the ends.

2. Take a plastic container that can fill water for about 2 cups. Take some of the vaseline and rub some on your braids.

Box sash windows are extremely popular in old and new houses in the UK and the United States. Originally sash windows were fitted to Victorian and Georgian properties. Box sash windows were traditionally made from hardwood or softwood but are now widely available in UPVC. Traditional sliding sash windows were single glazed units but nowadays are available in single glazing and as double glazed box sash windows. The term sash window refers to a type of window that has sliding panels usually with a weight and pulley system for opening the sliding window panes.

Box sash wooden windows are made with a hollow section within the window frame that holds the sash weights. The sash weights are attached to a sash cord that is in turn connected to the sliding window pane. Commonly the sash weights in the weight and pulley system are made from lead, although more recently some sash weights are made from steel. The sash cord is manufactured from braided cotton that has been pre-stretched and has a polished finish to prevent wear. Some of the newer sash cords are made from other materials and man made fibres such as polypropylene and nylon for increased abrasion resistance.

Box sash windows can be made from various different softwoods or hardwoods. Some woods used to manufacture box sashes are Mahogany, American white Oak, Pine and European Redwood. The timber used to manufacture sash windows should be vacuum pressure treated with preservatives and wax resins for maximum protection. It is also advisable to make sure wooden box sash windows have been treated with an insecticide and fungicide. This will prevent damage to the box sash windows from wood boring insects and protect against wood rotting fungus. Usually even box sash windows manufactured from pressure treated softwood will still have hardwood used for the window sills.

The traditional Georgian sash window would have six panes of glass in each section of the sliding sash window. Therefore ending up with a window containing a total of four panes of glass down by three panes of glass across. This configuration of the window panes is not compulsory for sash windows and sashes are available in many different styles and designs to suit the particular property. During the Victorian era many properties had bay windows fitted with sliding box sashes. Other Victorian style windows were Oriel windows and Queen Anne windows.

Windows are available in a variety of finishes from stained or varnished wood to gloss paint in a variety of colours. Hardwood and Softwood timber framed sash windows can be stained or varnished to enhance the natural grain and colour of the timber. Box sash windows requiring a painted finish should be treated with a quality primer or undercoat first before the top coat is applied.

New and replacement wooden framed box sash windows are now available with double glazing for maximum energy efficiency. While still made from traditional timber and manufactured in keeping with the original buildings facade the property owners can still benefit from double glazing. The double glazed box sash window can provide sound proofing and thermal insulation for the period home.

Caring For Braids with Extensions

Braid extensions still are very popular especially in the summer months when there is much fun and vacationing to do. Or maybe you just need a break from the daily struggle of styling your hair.

The beauty of adding extensions is that you are able to have any, length, color, or texture you want. The sky is the limit.

At one time braids were not excepted in the work place, that time is gone. However braids are treated too carefree and are not maintained properly causing the hair beneath it to dry out and break abnormally.

Hair is expected to shed on a normal basis, and surprised some when they are taking out the braids months later.

Shedding appears to be excessive but realize that it hasn’t been combed or brushed in months, so all of the normal shedding comes out at the same time.

However if you do not moisturize your hair the attached hair will absorb the little natural oils and leave you with nothing but dry hair.

Oils are also lost on pillow cases, hats and scarves. This is why it is important to add oils and moisture, Especially on relaxed hair.

Synthetic Braid Extensions

Synthetic braid are best done with a kanekalon fiber which is a higher quality of synthetic hair.

Shampooing Extension Braids

Shampooing human hair braids should be done with great care , because when the hair is wet it becomes softer and more easy to loosen up.

I suggest putting rubber bands at the end of the braided part of the braid tightly into six pony tails if style is individual box braids or micros.

Use warm but not hot water. Use a moisturizing shampoo, add hair anti-septic to shampoo to kill bacteria on scalp. Allow second shampoo with an astringent to sit for 3-5 minutes to penetrate the skin and refresh the scalp.

1. Section Hair into 6 ponytails
2. De-tangle any loose hair on ends
3. Shampoo twice
4. Rinse Well
5. Wrap with thick towel to absorb water
6. Apply liquid leave-in conditioner/treatment (will rejuvenate curly/wavy hair)
7. Spray hair with moisturizer especially your hair!
8. Place under very warm to hot dryer to finish drying (except synthetic hair)

Re-curling Synthetic Hair

Leave out step 8 for synthetic hair, the heat can damage the hair. Wrap with towel longer. Change towels for faster drying. Hair can be reset with perm rods and extremely hot water.

WARNING: Do not do this alone! Protect the Skin at all times. If hair is not long do not try this method

1. Braid three large braid to ends with a perm-rod on the ends.
2. Dip into deep container of very hot water from microwave.
3. Wrap immediately with cold wet towel to avoid touching skin.
4. Have dry large towel to finish absorbing water when hair is cooled off.

Curl is set!

Re-curling Human Hair

Human Hair can be re-curled with :

1. Rollers or rods (with quick dry styling mouse)
2. Curling Irons
3. Wet and wavy hair is rejuvenated when wet.

Hair should be sprayed with moisturizers and hair oils to allow the hair to maintain oils to prevent abnormal hair shedding and scalp dryness.Remember, “Dry Hair Breaks“.

Hair is to be wrap with a scarf or covered with large satin hair bonnet to prevent loose hairs from rubbing out of the braids and attracting lint.

Your braid style should last at least two months with proper maintenance.

FYI: If your braid or to delicate to shampoo or you are too afraid because of a bad experience. Use seabreeze on cotton and wipe scalp clean! Itching in public is not cool!
